Xiaomi has a vast range of home automation products and a good range of electric scooters that you can consider in your customer purchasing journey. If you are an adventurous person that would like to ride along with your town’s suburban areas or simply travel to nearby places with your friends for a relaxing time, these are perfect for you.

It can, however, be challenging when it comes to selecting the right electric scooter for you. There are various brands to choose from, such as Segway Ninebot, MeEarth, Beam, and so much more. On the bright side, investing in electric transportation can incur benefits, including saving maintenance and petrol costs, easily transportable, and minimising carbon emissions.

In this article, we are going to compare which Xiaomi Electric Scooters are suitable for you.

Factors To Consider When Purchasing An Electric Scooter

If you’re new to electric scooters, you may be wondering what you should take into account when purchasing one. Let’s take a look at seven factors that can help determine the perfect electric scooter for you.

Speed

On average, an electric scooter’s top speed ranges between 20 km/h to 25 km/h. Depending on the mode your scooter is in, the range may vary. Some municipalities even have laws in place to limit the speed of an electric scooter. Moreover, they also restrict users from riding their e-scooters on the roadside and instead on pedestrian sidewalks. Also, speed is dictated by the type of terrain at your disposal. Not every surface on the ground is smooth.

Pro Tip #1: Most states in Australia have not legalised electric scooters, and we recommend researching the laws before purchasing one.

Pro Tip #2: Always wear a helmet when riding your scooter at any speed to ensure you are safe from harm’s way.

Range

The range is referred to the distance your electric scooter can travel on a full charge. The farther the distance, the larger the battery is needed to accommodate for that. Hence, the scooter’s weight will increase, and so will the cost.

Various factors can determine the ideal range to go for. If your daily commute involves a longer distance and hill climbs, then opt for a model with a higher capacity. Alternatively, if you are only using it for short distances to the convenience store, you don’t necessarily need a more extended range.

Do keep in mind that the range can be affected by rider weight, speed, terrain, and surfaces.

Pro Tip: Like with any device, your electric scooter’s range and battery life will decline over time. Generally, you’d want a scooter with a higher capacity.

Tires

An electric scooter’s tires generally come in two forms: Solid (airless) tires and pneumatic (air-filled) tires.

  • Solid tires: They require little to no maintenance, but the ride quality isn’t up to par with pneumatic tires. You’re likely to feel all the bumps and jerks during your ride, especially in harsher road terrains, as they have nothing to absorb. If your daily ride involves thorns, glass, or nails, this would be the better choice.

  • Pneumatic tires: They provide a much better ride quality, with or without suspension (shock absorbers). Their rubber performs much better in adverse road terrains. They also offer the added advantage of shock absorption so that you won’t feel every knock and jerk during your ride. However, they are much harder to maintain as they are prone to punctures.

Weight

The weight of an electric scooter can be a significant consideration, especially when you’re going to be carrying them daily. Most electric scooters nowadays are portable and lightweight, making them travel friendly.

Ask yourself what you want to use them for: If you’re going to be using your scooter for daily commuting purposes to solve any last-mile problems, you may want to consider going for a lighter model. On the flip side, if you’re someone who wants it for leisure purposes, portability isn’t a significant factor compared to the speed and build quality.

Pro Tip: Keep in mind that you will still have to mount your scooter into the trunk of your car and sometimes up the stairs if you live in a building without elevators.

Lighting

Riding an electric scooter after dark can be pretty dangerous if it does not have lights. You may get into an accident if you’re not careful. Like bicycles, they usually come with a front white light and a rear red light to add visibility to your surroundings. Consider choosing a scooter with a higher LED light capacity.

Brakes

Safety is essential when it comes to riding electric transportation. Brakes are a way to ensure that. There are various brakes such as regenerative, electric, foot, drum, and disc brakes.

  • Regenerative brakes: Regenerative brakes are stimulated by a switch that electrically couples the motor into the charging system when then creates resistance to motor rotation. The idea is that you can recover energy during braking and extending the range.

  • Electric brakes: Similar to regenerative braking systems, but they do not recover energy during braking. They are switched on by a switch that shorts the motor’s terminals, creating resistance to motor rotation. You can use them in two ways; brake levers push buttons.

  • Foot brakes: As the name suggests, it uses your foot to stop the vehicle. They have a hinged fender pushed into the rear tire and can be activated when you move your foot against it. However, this method is easier to lose balance and skid, which can be dangerous.

  • Drum brakes: Drum brakes are enclosed inside the wheel hub with pads pushing outward against the braking surface. This would cause friction and slow down the scooter. Just like disc brakes, they are activated by a hand lever. However, when a drum brake overheats, it becomes less effective over time.

  • Disc brakes: They use a metal disc called a rotor attached to and spins with the electric scooter’s wheel. The most common design for the control for brakes is a hand lever, and when it’s pulled, it activates a component known as a calliper surrounding the rotor. The calliper then pinches the spinning rotor to slow down the scooter.

Warranty

Lastly, electric scooters are not cheap as they cost about $500 to $1000. It is worth choosing a retailer (*cough* PCByte *cough*) that provides warranty and after-sales service to ensure you get the most out of your purchase.

There may be instances where the item you purchase is already faulty right out of the box, and having a warranty can ensure that you will get your money back or at least a replacement unit.

Even though the scooter only has a maximum speed of 20 km/h and a range of 20 km on a full charge, it’s still perfect for some light riding to your nearest convenience store.

Much like the 1S, it also integrated 8.5” pneumatic tires for a smoother ride without bumps and jerks every turn. The Essential also makes it safer for users to ride with its E-ABS anti-lock brakes. Additionally, the scooter’s Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) is upgraded to increase the battery life performance to ride the last mile. And users can also connect it to their smartphones to monitor the scooter’s riding data.

If you love the M365 model, then you’re going to love the Pro, which some may refer to as the M365 Pro. The Pro is designed to let users take their journey further with a higher performance motor of 300W, providing a max speed of 25 km/h and a max range of 45 km.

There’s no question that the Pro is bulkier and heavier than Xiaomi’s other range of scooters. Weighing at 14.2 kg, it has the biggest frame, but the range and speed make up for it. The Pro also has three speed modes for users to choose from: ECO, Standard, and Sports. Besides, you can be assured that your safety is being considered with its dual braking system and pneumatic tires for a sleek ride.

The Pro scooter is excellent for users who want to travel long distances with its solid build but don’t mind the additional weight that comes with it.

Note: This scooter is, unfortunately, no longer in production. We recommend looking at the Mi Electric Scooter Pro 2 for an alternative!
